Maximize Indoor Light in the Pacific Northwest with Shutters

Looking for a custom window covering that adds privacy to your home while still allowing for maximal interior light? As we all know, western Washington is known for its abundance of overcast days and it is important to many people who reside in Seattle, Kirkland, Renton, Bellevue, and the surrounding areas to create light-filled and relaxing spaces. Wood shutters are the perfect solution to this problem as they permit optimal light control and privacy while maximizing the light level in your home. See the photos below for examples.

Choose Newport Custom Shutters for your Window Covering Needs

Choosing Newport Custom Shutters to design and manufacture custom wooden shutters for your home in white or similarly light colored paint finishes will optimize light reflection and create a sense of an airy kitchen, living room, bedroom, or bathroom. Tilting the louvers on your shutters up will decrease the light in your room and help to cool your home during summer or promote sleep during daytime hours such as for a kids’ room or for those who work night shifts. Tilting the louvers on your shutters down will allow you to have privacy in your home but refract the light in such a way that maintains most of the ambient light coming from outside.

Noise Reduction Benefits of Wood Shutters

Outdoor noise can ruin the ambience of your home and prove to be distracting when trying to relax or sleep. The installation of custom wood shutters will greatly help to reduce noise and give you a restful escape from the outside world. In the greater metropolitan Seattle area including ever-growing cities such as Bellevue, Kirkland, Issaquah, Renton, and Tacoma, we are no stranger to the sounds of increased traffic and construction. Shutters offer the perfect solution through both visual privacy and auditory insulation from the noise of the world around us.

Do shutters help to reduce road noise?

The answer is a resounding ‘yes!’ when shutters, such as ours, are made of real solid hardwood. Since our shutters are made to fit perfectly inside your windows, they let very little noise travel through. Shutters are far superior to blinds and curtains when it comes to noise reduction because they shut completely as doors do and wood is significantly more soundproof than most other materials. If you are seeking a beautiful, custom window covering that also offers noise insulation, we are here to help.

Choosing the Right Shutter Louver Size for Your Home

Louver Basics

Whether you are looking for more privacy, better light control, or just a classic interior, plantation shutters have it all. The louvers, or the movable wood blades, in shutters are used to let in or block out light. Simply tilting the louvers will allow you to control how much light enters your room. We offer 5 different louver sizes shown in the photos below.

How to Choose a Louver Size

Which louver size you choose can be determined by the aesthetic you wish to achieve, the level of light control desired, and the size of your windows. Our most popular sizes are the 2-1/2” and 3-1/2” louvers. Choosing one of these louver sizes will allow you to have fewer louvers and therefore let in more light.

Desiring a more traditional look? Smaller louvers let in less light because there are naturally more of them and may be something you may want to consider.

Visualizing in Your Home

During our no-obligation in-home visit and estimate, we will provide skilled advice on which louver size options would best suit your windows and home aesthetic. We also have full-sized working samples of all the louver sizes and are more than happy to hold them up in your windows. Specialty Shutters for Unique Windows

Uniquely shaped windows need a creative design solution. Shutters may be that perfect solution. Custom made shutters to suit a raked, arched, or oval window are effective at highlighting the architecture without impeding it. With specialty shapes, a template is made onsite and then brought back to our woodshop in Redmond to be fabricated. Much of the manufacture is done entirely by hand. This produces a truly splendid result that will be enjoyed for years to come. View the gallery below for examples of custom-made shutters for unique windows.

Buying tips for wood shutters

If you are in a room without proper window treatments it can be a bit unnerving. Windows without some sort of covering can allow anyone to see into your home posing a possible security risk for you and your loved ones. Typical blinds are easily broken and often need replacing. Curtains allow gaps where they meet and are either closed or open with no option in between. Shutters however are an excellent solution. They are a handsome window treatment that adds value to your home. They can offer total privacy or when opened let in as much light and view as desired. Here are some tips when considering wood shutters and how to get the most out of them.

Which type of wood shutters to choose:

Rooms that require privacy do best with full height shutters like those above. For rooms that need a little less privacy, cafe shutters can work well. They cover the lower portion of the window up to desired point and then the top space is left open to allow natural light in. If you have questions about which shutters would work the best in your interior please give Newport Custom Shutters a call or you can send us a message using the contact page right here on our website.
